Ranchi:
Jharkhand High Court on Thursday issued contempt notices to JDP chief Salkhan Murmu, social activist Dayamani Barla and four others for burning its effigy on October 4.
Taking suo motu cognisance, the division bench of Justices D N Patel and Prashant Kumar served the notices and asked them why contempt proceedings would not be brought against them for burning the high court's effigy.
The Jharkhand Bar Association had on October 5 brought the effigy burning incident near Raj Bhavan in Ranchi to the notice of the high court.
As per the court's earlier orders, the government on Thursday submitted the action taken report and newspaper clippings of the effigy burning.
Jharkhand Dishom Party leader Murmu and others had resorted to indefinite hunger strike on October 4 near Raj Bhavan in support of a charter of demands including protection of land in Ranchi district's Nagari village under Chota Nagpur Tenancy Act.
He had called off the hunger-strike after being arrested for flouting prohibitory orders. He was released later.
Meanwhile, a local court on Thursday reserved the bail petition of Dayamani Barla, who is in judicial custody from October 15 after she surrendered before the court in connection with a 2006 case.
