New Delhi:
Experts are warning Delhi could be facing its worst Dengue attack this year. The number of cases is going up steadily and it's expected to peak in September.
Still grieving for their sister who died on August 12 after she got dengue Shahzad and his 18-year-old brother have now tested positive for dengue. They live in Jamia Nagar, which has seen the largest number of dengue cases.
"If authorities had taken care, this could have been prevented. Fogging has increased but people are still falling ill," said Shahzad, Dengue patient.
Another Jamia resident Amaanat says, "The Chief Minister's son is representing our ward, but no money has come to help us so far."
Outside an MCD school here, a drain lies open, becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Children are wearing long trousers and full sleeves, but this clearly shows how MCD has fallen short in tackling dengue in this area.
But it's not just Jamia Nagar, Delhi's VIP areas are violating rules as well. Nirman Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan and the Delhi Jal Board have all been fined.
"We have already challaned 136 VIP areas, including the Jal Board and MCD horticultural corporation," said Prithviraj Sawhney, Mayor.
Experts feel, this year, Delhi may see its worst dengue attack. The disease peaks in September but there have already been 741 cases so far this year compared to the 67 reported last year.
Tourists and delegates will start arriving soon for the Commonwealth Games. Yet this is the state of affairs just a few feet away from one of the hostels that is going to house 700 guests during the games.
