Kanpur professor suspended over rape charges

Kanpur: A professor, arrested over alleged rape charges made by his tenant, was suspended from the Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University in Kanpur, varsity officials said.

Professor V N Pal has been suspended after he was arrested in an attempt to rape and sent to judicial custody for 14-days, Kanpur University Vice-Chancellor Harsha Kumar Sehgal said.

Under a provision, the university can suspend any worker or employee if they stay in a jail for more than 40 hours, he said.

According to the police, Pal and his tenant - a retired policewoman - had an altercation on September 17 over vacating a part of the house that she had occupied.

Professor Pal wanted to get his house vacated from the woman, whose husband is in prison, and had taken help from the police on many occasions, they said.

Following the altercation, the woman had allegedly beaten Pal with the help of some friends and then informed the police. She charged that after finding her alone in the house, Pal attempted to rape her.

When Pal was produced in the court many women organisations shouted slogans against him, police said. The teachers at the university said only a transparent inquiry can bring out the truth behind the allegations.
