Kanpur: Toddler booked for power theft

Kanpur: In a goof-up, the Kanpur Electricity Supply Company and police booked a toddler visiting his grandmother here for power theft.

An FIR was registered against two-and-a-half-year-old Shahnawaz and seven others on February 3 when KESCO officials carried out raids to check power theft in a locality in Kanpur, police sources said on Friday.

After the case was booked at Bajriya police station, police reached the houses of the eight accused yesterday to arrest them.

However, when they reached the house of the eighth 'accused' Shahnawaz, his grandmother produced the child much to the amazement of the police.

Perplexed police personnel then informed their seniors that one of the accused was a child. When the matter came to light, KESCO officials said the child was booked by mistake.

KESCO Chief Engineer Keshavram today said the mix-up happened as people of the locality did not give out the correct names of those involved in power theft.

When a raid was carried out at Shahnawaz's house, some family member named the child leading to the mix-up, he said.

The chief engineer said his family members should have been named instead. Keshavram said they have written to police to strike out the toddler's name from the FIR.

An inquiry committee headed by senior KESCO engineer S K Rastogi has been set up to probe into the incident. Shahnawaz, a native of Rae Bareily, had come to his grandmother's house recently.
