Kashmir receives fresh spell of snow

Srinagar: Breaking nearly a month-long dry spell, parts of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday received snow and rains.

The upper reaches of Kashmir valley including the famous hill resort of Gulmarg and Kupwara received snowfall while rains lashed plains on Friday morning, Met department said.

The region has witnessed dry weather for major part of the winter season and snow coupled with rains had last hit parts of Kashmir on January 3, ending nearly a two-month long dry spell.

The weather also provided much needed relief to the people with the night temperature further falling with Jammu recording a low of 12.0 - four degrees above normal.

Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a minimum of 4.0 degrees as against 1.5 degrees yesterday. The summer capital of the state also recorded 6.6 mm of rains till 0830 hours.

The hill resort of Gulmarg, 60 kms from here, received a fresh spell of snow on Thursday night and recorded a temperature of minus 4.0 degrees. A total of 10.4 mm of snow coupled with rains was recorded here.

In other areas of the valley, the night temperature improved with Qazigund recording 3.4 degrees as against 1.4 recorded yesterday. Pahalgam recorded 0.2 while Kupwara which experienced snowfall recorded a low of 0.6 degrees. A total of 14 mm of snow and rain was recorded till 0830 hours.

Banihal in Jammu with a low of 1.5 degrees was the coldest and received a maximum rainfall of 17.8 mm. Katra had a low of 9.7 followed by Bhaderwah (4.5) and Batote (4.2).

However, minimum temperature in frontier region of Ladakh remained unchanged with Leh recording a low of minus 10.6 and Kargil minus 5.6.
