Kolkata: A car with a number plate of Pakistan's Lahore was found parked illegally in a busy market in the central part of the city, causing a flutter that prompted the police to trace its owner after seizing it.
The Toyota Land Cruiser having number plate that read L 992 WYZ and a sticker of Islamabad attached to it, was parked illegally in front of the Bible Society of India in the New Market area on Saturday night.
The police, after getting information from the locals, broke into the vehicle and seized the driving license, some documents, books and utensils.
A trail that followed led to identification of the owner as Alexander Henry Porcell of London, a student of Anthropology in Oxford University, who was traced by the police to a hotel on Sudder street in the vicinity.
He was then taken to the New Market police station and was questioned for illegally parking the car in a busy area, a senior police officer said.
Porcell possibly hired the car from Pakistan and came to India, the police said.
Initial investigation revealed that Porcell had an international driving license and passport.
