Kolkata on high alert after terror threat

Kolkata: Security in this metropolis has been stepped up following inputs received from the Centre on a possible terrorist strike in Kolkata.

"We have received certain inputs from the Centre and are working on it. We have taken every possible measure to keep the city secure," Joint Commissioner of Police (HQ) Jawed Shamim told reporters on Thursday.

Shopping malls and other vulnerable places have been identified and its authorities have been asked to maintain a watch, he said.

Bangladesh-based terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) has targeted the city, police said, adding the IM could be planning blasts or kidnap high profile industrialists.

The outfit has a base here because Amir Reza Khan, one of the accused in the 2002 American Center attack and IM founder, hailed from the metropolis and still maintained contact in the city, they said.

"Our Special Force and anti-terror experts have been deployed and we have urged Kolkatans to be alert," a senior officer said.

All police stations have been placed on high alert, the officer added.
