Kolkata: Students allegedly try to burn college principal alive

Kolkata: After some students allegedly tried to burn alive the principal of a reputed city college, police on Tuesday initiated two cases against an alumnus of the institution.

"We have filed two cases against Mukesh Tripathi, a former student who poured petrol on South City College principal Khagendrananth Adhikary and then tried to commit suicide by sprinkling it on himself," Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), Jawed Shamim said.

"Two cases have been started against him, one for trying to commit suicide and another for attempt to murder" Shamim said.

Tripathi has been absconding and police are looking for him, the officer added.

Adhikary on Monday alleged that some students belonging to a union poured petrol on him because he refused to admit candidates who did not feature in the merit list.

Though first he did not lodge a complaint saying "they are my students after all", later an FIR was lodged and on the basis of the complaint police started the cases.
