Kota: Woman constable raped, killed

Kota: A day after the body of Maya Yadav, a woman constable in Kota, was found at her residence, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a government job for her family on Saturday.

Maya Yadav who had been posted at the Chechat police station since December 2009 was allegedly raped and murdered. Police have arrested the two key accused in the case - a cook and a constable.

"Since the incident happened near the police station, cops were suspected to be behind it. We began our probe and found that two policemen were behind incident. They tried to misbehave with her in an inebriated state. When she warned them that she would complain to the higher authorities, they raped and murdered her. We have arrested the two after detailed interrogation," said Lalit Maheshwari, Additional Superintendent of Police, Kota.

The CM also said that all the staff of the Chechat police station in Kota should be sent back to the police line pending an inquiry into the death of the constable.

"Such an incident is beyond the government's tolerance. We took immediate action, we sent an officer of the ADG rank to the spot. We have asked the DGP to monitor the situation. We will convey a strong message that the culprits, whoever they may be, will be brought to justice," he said.

An SHO (Station House Officer) and a sentry have also been suspended for negligence.

Six policemen had been injured on Friday when protesters, demanding immediate action, turned violent.
