Life of newly born cubs in Ranthambhore forest in danger

Jaipur: "Survival of the fittest" is rule of the jungle. If this is a fact then lives of two newly born cubs in Ranthambhore forest are in danger. No, it is not that the cubs are unable to cope up with the flora and fauna of the national park but they are having threat from tigers and other wild animals who are roaming in the same area.

According to the forest department sources living near the Ranthambhore forests, two male tigers are roaming in the same territory where the mother of the two cubs stay.

Wildlife experts said that the tigers could prove to be a great threat to the cubs. They also said that nothing can be done to save the cubs in case they are attack by some other animals.

The experts said that according to the Project Tiger, there should be no human interference in the wildlife and if any animal attacks another animal or their young ones, nothing can be done to save the wounded animal. "In such cases the rule of jungle will prevail and the fittest animals survive," said a wildlife expert.

RS Shekhawat, deputy field director, Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve, while speaking to DNA said, "Nothing can be done in case there is attack on these cubs by some other animal. Only the tigress [mother of the cubs] can guard these cubs."

Meanwhile, some other experts said that if the forest department had acted wisely, security of these cubs could have been ensured. Dharminder Khandal, a wildlife expert who runs Tiger Watch, a non-governmental organisation, said, "Recently the forest department has shifted the father of these cubs to Sariska forests. If the tiger had been kept here, he could have guarded the cubs. But now the tigress alone will have to ensure the safety of the cubs."

Adding further Khandal said, "Since the cubs depend on their mother's milk, the tigress has to ensure that she gets good diet to produce enough milk for her cubs. For hunting prey animals, she has to go away and her absence could prove dangerous for her cubs as other animals such as hyna can kill the cubs."
