Liftman's 80-ft dive to escape from stuck elevator fails, dies

Thane: Attempting to escape from a stuck elevator, a liftman unwittingly jumped to his death and landed in the lift's bay area on Monday.

The mishap took place when the elevator got stuck between eighth and ninth floors of DNS Tower, at Court Naka. At 3.30pm, when the lift stopped after it developed a snag, liftman Patil informed the building watchman and called out for help. Meanwhile, he tried to jump out of the elevator, after opening the doors, but he couldn't judge the gap and fell down in the lift's bay area - from a height of almost 80 feet.

He was immediately rushed to the Thane civil hospital where he was declared dead before admission. Thane police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the matter.

The deceased 28-year-old Patil, a native resident of Jalgaon, was working in the building since the past few months.
