Ahmedabad:
A woman reportedly poisoned her seven-year old daughter, and then tried taking her own life, near Viramgam. However, while the woman survived, her daughter died during treatment at VS Hospital in the city on Sunday.
Asha, who had stayed at her father's place at Mahi in Vadgam taluka for a week, was on her way back to her husband's place at Navapura in Viramgam, accompanied by her daughter Shilpa.
On the way, the two met Asha's sister and brother-in-law, who took them to their place.
While Asha's brother-in-law informed her husband of her and her daughter's arrival, Asha reportedly gave her daughter a poisonous drink. The child had the drink, and Asha herself consumed some of it.
However, while Asha survived, the child succumbed to the poison on Sunday.
Later, when a complaint was lodged with the Viramgam police, it was revealed that Asha allegedly had an extra-marital affair, and as a result, did not want to live with her husband anymore.
However, her family was against her decision, said the cops. This was also the reason she left her husband's place for six days, said the police.
"We are investigating the matter. As of now, it is not very clear as to what prompted Asha to take such an extreme step. However, it appears that she was in an extra-marital relationship, and that may have to do with the incident," said a police source.
The police said that Asha's husband was initially reluctant to lodge a complaint, but after the death of the child, he was left with no choice but to file a case.
