Madurai: The Madurai police have rescued 42 bonded labourers from sweet manufacturing places in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha. Eighteen of them are children.
Many of these labourers allege that they were frequently given electric shocks and kept in a closed compound cut off from outside worlds.
Nine brokers and two owners have been arrested. "The parents should verify these sweet manufacturers before sending their children. The rescued people will be rehabilitated and compensation paid," said Asra Garg, Superintendent of Police, Madurai.
The rescue comes following a tip off by a boy who managed to escape.
