Vadodara:
A 35-year-old man arrested on charges of rape, escaped from police custody on Tuesday and allegedly committed suicide by throwing himself before a running train near here, police said today.
The incident took place when Bhavesh Jagdishbhai Patel, held for raping a 10-year-old girl in Kambhola village about 40 km from here, gave the police a slip, after seeking permission to go the toilet, J M Bariya sub inspector at Karjan, said.
Police had detained the deceased after complaint from the mother of girl who alleged that Bhavesh had raped her in a shop located in the village on December 9.
The complaint was lodged a day after and the accused was kept in the police lock up for sending him to the SSG hospital at Vadodara for medical checkup yesterday.
Police have filed a complaint against the PSO on duty for negligence.
