Kolkata: A man allegedly tried to commit suicide at the Belgachia station of the Metro Railway in Kolkata on Sunday evening, but was promptly saved by alert railway staff and Railway Protection Force personnel.
Metro Railway sources told PTI that Purnendu Dutta, a 65- year-old retired schoolteacher jumped on the Up line at the station at 6.20 PM and tried to reach for the third rail which carries electricity.
RPF personnel and Metro Railway staff, however, pulled him out before he could touch the third rail. There was no train on the line at that time.
A suicide note recovered from Dutta said he was committing suicide owing to financial and domestic problems.
Dutta was later handed over to his family, the sources said adding train services remained unaffected.
