A 28-year-old man from Mumbra in Thane district has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment by a special court, for raping a minor in 2015.
A special POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) court judge recently convicted Shabbir Mulani and also imposed a fine of Rs. 30,000.
He was found guilty of rape, causing miscarriage and also under the child sexual abuse law.
The man is a contractor involved in designing imitation jewellery, who also used to assign contracts of jewellery designing to women in the locality.
Prosecutor Vivek G Kadu, representing the prosecution, informed the court that the victim who resided in the vicinity used to collect material from Mulani's unit for designing jewellery.
On May 20, 2015 Shabbir Mulani called survivor, who was 17-years-old then, to his unit for packing the jewellery. When she came, he sexually assaulted her, the prosecution said.
Two months later, she was admitted to a hospital due to some health issues. During check-up, doctors found her to be two months pregnant.
On learning about the girl's pregnancy, Mulani reached the hospital and forced her to take pregnancy termination pills. As a result, the teenager suffered a miscarriage.
Till that time, she had not disclosed about the sexual assault as Mulani kept threatening her, the prosecution said. Later she narrated her ordeal to her family, following which a complaint was lodged against Mulani and further action was taken.
