An elderly man was sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court for killing his 18-month-old grandson by drowning him in a water tank.
The court of Additional Sessions Judge S K Aggarwal also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Mohinder Singh. The convict will have to serve an additional imprisonment of two-and-a-half years if he does not pay the fine.
According to the prosecution, Charanjit Kaur, mother of deceased Harpreet Singh, had started living with her father after the deaths of her mother and brother.
In her complaint to the police, Kaur had also stated that her father Mohinder was a drug addict and an alcoholic person, who used to sell even household items to meet his needs.
On November 24, 2009 when she was out of the house for half an hour, her father threw Harpreet in the water tank of the house drowning him.
When Kaur returned, she found her son missing, and her father declined to say anything. Later, the child was found dead in the water tank.
