Mumbai:
The Andheri police have arrested a 35-year-old man recently on the charges of raping and cheating a 22-year-old college student.
The police said Rajesh Doshi had promised to marry Ranjana (name changed to protect identity). Doshi lived with his wife and eight-year-old son at Koldongri in Andheri (East).
Ranjana lived with her parents in the same area. He used to visit her place as both the family had friendly relations.
In her complaint to the police, Ranjana said that in 2009 she refused to get married to the man of her parents' choice since Doshi had promised to marry her.
But Doshi convinced Ranjana to marry a friend of his, Parmar, saying that it would not be possible for him marry her before divorcing his wife. However, he rented a place and stayed with her off and on for a year.
"In March 2009, the victim told her parents that she had married Doshi in the Bandra court. Doshi then kept her in Alibaug for a month at his friend's house. Then he kept her at another friend's house in Aurangabad for a month," said police inspector S Phadtare.
Later, the police said, Doshi rented a flat in Bhayander and had physical relation with Ranjana. But whenever she talked about marriage, Doshi countered it by saying that she should get a divorce from Parmar first.
"The victim then filed a divorce petition in March. But when she realised that Doshi was not filing for a divorce from his wife, she returned to her parents and told the whole story," said the officer.
Doshi was arrested on October 14. The police are on the lookout for Parmar.
