Man Jailed For Five Years in Fake Currency Case in Thane

Thane: A local court today sentenced a 50-year-old man from Vashi in Navi Mumbai to five years of rigorous imprisonment for possessing fake currency notes with a face value of Rs 90,000.

Thane Additional Sessions Judge V K Shewale also slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 on convict Noor Jiyarot Islam, failing which he has to undergo imprisonment for another six months.

The other accused in the case Mohammad Paighambar Ali Shaikh (28) was, however, acquitted by the judge for want of sufficient evidence.

The third accused in the case Suleman Rumani Shaikh, 36, is still at large. The court has already declared him an absconder and ordered attachment of his property.

According to police, Noor and Ali were arrested near a branch of a leading private sector bank in Vashi on June 22, 2013 in possession of 190 fake currency notes of denominations Rs 1000, Rs 500 and Rs 100 collectively worth Rs 90,000.

Shaik had managed to escape, police said.
