In a case of custodial death, a 29-year old man, arrested on the charge of stealing a mobile phone, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well while being escorted by a police team in the district on Tuesday, police said.
Chandran of Puliamkombai near Sathyamangalam was arrested on Tuesday morning on a complaint by a resident of the village that the former and his accomplice waylaid him and took away his mobile phone.
A seven-member police team led by SI Devaraj had taken Chandran to the village after he told them that he had kept the mobile phone in his house. However, Chandran suddenly escaped from the escorting police and jumped into an unused open well and drowned, police claimed.
A case of unnatural death had been registered and top district police officials visited the spot.
