Man pays Rs 10 lakh for VIP car number

Chandigarh: A farmer-turned-realtor has paid Rs 10 lakh to Chandigarh registration and licensing authority for acquiring a vehicle registration number.

As the hammer went down at the auction on Saturday, N S Shergill paid the record price for the number CH01-AC-0001.

In his late 30s, Shergill, who owns farms in Kharar and Kurali and is also into real estate business, said his teacher-wife had told him to drop the idea of spending a huge amount for acquiring a number, reasoning that it would buy them another car. However, he added "my heart said that I should have this number."

The auction of registration numbers of CH01 AC series fetched the Chandigarh's Registration and Licensing Authority Rs 39.63 lakh, against a total reserve price of Rs 7.1 lakh.

As many as 78 numbers were auctioned in the series.
