Bhopal:
A 35-year-old man was shot at, allegedly by family members of the girl whom he had married against their wishes, police said on Saturday.
The girl's father Asgar Ali, his sons Shariq, Shoaib, Qashib and a relative Rasheed among others have been booked under section 147, 148, 149 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for attempting to kill Syed Iqbal on June 25, area City Superintendent of Police CSP) Manu Vyas said.
Iqbal, a resident of Retighat area married Zaina from Sahahjhanabad on January 4, against her family wishes.
In February, Zaina's family requested Iqbal to send their daughter home with an assurance that she will return in few days, police sources said.
But when she reached her father's place, her family began searching for a groom to marry her off with someone else belonging to their community (Khokhar), they said.
However, on March 18, Zaina returned to Iqbal's place and was staying with him following which he was attacked.
Iqbal sustained two bullet injuries, one of his back, the CSP said adding efforts are on to arrest the accused and raids have been carried out in this regard.
Talliya Police Station Incharge K M Singh said Iqbal's condition was stable after he was operated upon.
The accused also allegedly wanted to get rid of their daughter and police is also investigating the 'honour' angle.
Madhya Pradesh happens to be one of the states to which the Apex Court had issued notices this week seeking steps taken by the state government to protect young couples from honour killing.
