Customs Department officials have seized gold valued at Rs 30.60 lakh allegedly being smuggled into the country by a man on his arrival in Mangalore from Dubai and arrested him.
Four gold pieces concealed in an air compressor were seized from 39-year-old Muhammad Kunhi Cheeri Kundu, a resident of Kasargod district in Kerala, as he arrived at the Mangalore International Airport yesterday, Customs officials said.
The passenger was arrested and produced before the Magistrate, they said.
Commissioner of Customs, Mangalore, D Purushotham expressed his concern over increasing smuggling and directed the officers to intensify the vigilance and surveillance to check it.
