Mumbai:
The Mumbai marathon is next weekend, but the prestigious Marathon flame was brought to Mumbai from Greece early on Sunday morning. This is the first time the flame was brought to the city and is the first city outside of Europe to get the flame.
Every year, the 'Marathon Flame' is lit in Greece and then relayed across the world to any one country hosting a world-class marathon.
The flame was brought by Maria Polyzou, the ex-Marathon champion, who still holds the Greek national record and received by Deputy Mayor of Mumbai Shraddha Jadhav and Bollywood star John Abraham.
The flame will eventually arrive at the Hutatma Chowk, where another, specially erected 15-foot high torch will be lit.
Earlier, a social worker from Worli had filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bombay High Court and sought a stay on the event citing various reasons.
However, the Bombay High Court had refused to stay the Mumbai Marathon slated for January 17, 2010.
