Medicos' career in jeopardy
New Delhi: The fate of 300 medical students of a private medical college near Chennai hangs in balance as the Supreme Court has questioned the admission process of the institute without being affiliated to any university.

The ACS Medical College had admitted 150 students for the first year medical course in 2008-09 and 150 in the current academic year.

The college has claimed that it is part of deemed university, MGR Educational and Research Centre. However, it did not get HRD ministry's approval and approached the Supreme Court.

The Chief Justice of India, K G Balakrishna, heading the Bench questioned the college for admitting the students without approval from the government.

The chief justice said, "You have put the students in peril this year and last year. You have not got UGC recommendation. Your present status is neither deemed university nor affiliated to any university in Tamil Nadu".

The college told court that Centre has given the letter of intent to start the college and also has the permission of Medical Council of India. The Chief Justice countered and said, "UGC report says you don't have infrastructure. You discharge all your students".

Slamming the college authorities K G Balakrishna said, "Students admitted should know where they stand. HRD ministry has denied deemed university status."

As the counsel for the college pleaded for adjournment, the apex court adjourned the case to next week.
