In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old woman was found buried in the backyard of a home for the mentally challenged in the Khajurdaho village in the Hooghly district of West Bengal.
Guria, an inmate of the privately-run Rehabilitation Centre for Mentally Ill Persons (Women), had been admitted to the home on May 22 this year. She died a month later - on June 26 - and was buried five days later in a makeshift grave.
Authorities at the rehab centre claim that Guria died of cardiac arrest. But as the police exhumed her body on Wednesday, the injury marks on the victim's body told an entirely different story.
The police immediately arrested three people including the Secretary of the rehab centre, Uday Kumar Konar, on charges of murder and attempt to destroy evidence.
But there are several other signs that indicate foul play. Why was Guria's body left to rot for five days after she died, why was she mysteriously buried in the backyard of the rehab centre - these are some of the key questions that the police would be seeking answers for.
"Body has been dug up and will be sent for post-mortem in the morning," said Tanmoy Roy Choudhury, Superintendent of police, Hooghly.
State Women and Child Development minister Sabitri Mitra has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
"Investigations are being done. Body has been dug up and already sent for post-mortem. SP and DM are investigating. We will let you know what the truth is. I was told when someone dies you cremate or bury them...how can you just bury someone like that? You have to inform the Block Development Officer, "Ms Mitra said.
The rehab centre is also under the scanner for reports of frequent visits by outsiders. That the home continued to run despite its licence having expired last year is also likely to be investigated by the police.
