Bangalore:
A nine-inch long missile unearthed by workers of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in Kalasipalya on Monday has created much curiosity in the city. Ballistic experts and officials from the state bomb disposal squad believe the missile to be over 70 years old suggesting that it could be a relic of World War II.
A member from the bomb disposal squad said that the rusted missile was still live.
"We cannot say anything now. The explosive material inside the nine inch by three inch bullet-shaped casing seems to be intact. We have kept it inside a bomb basket so that it will not pose any danger to people around," said the bomb disposal squad member.
The missile, which is kept at Kalasipalya police station, is attracting curious onlookers. However, the police are keeping them at bay.
The missile was found when BBMP workers were digging to erect a signboard in front of United Merchants' Association. It was found two feet below the ground.
"They informed us immediately. A complaint was filed and the missile was handed over to us," said Bhaskar Vokkaliga, inspector, Kalasipalyam police station.
The bomb disposal squad soon came to the action. M Jagadish, deputy superintendent of the squad, inspected the missile.
The police have taken permission from the VIII additional chief metropolitan magistrate to dispose it off with instructions from the bomb squad. The inspector general of police (intelligence) would also be informed about the discovery, said the police.
