Kolkata: An 18 month-old was allegedly beaten by her mother and abandoned near a river in Jhargram in West Bengal.
The mother, who is from Jharkhand, had moved to West Bengal and was living with a man in Jhargram.
The police found the girl on Sunday after the villagers informed them that the child, badly injured, was lying near the river bank. She was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to NRS government hospital in Kolkata. The girl's arm is fractured and she has suffered injuries on the head.
According to police sources, the girl's mother said she had called her husband, asking him to take the daughter home. However, when the husband did not respond, she beat up the child and left her on the riverbank to die, the sources added.
The woman and the man she was living with have been arrested.
