Mumbai: 10,000 hawkers queue up for registration

Mumbai: Paying heed to the call by the civic body, more than 10,000 hawkers have so far applied for getting registered. The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had, last month, invited application from the hawkers for registration under the hawkers' policy.

The civic corporation will soon begin the scrutiny of the documents. "We have not yet started the process of scrutinising the documents. Everyone can apply, but the final call will be taken on the number of documents they submit. The number of hawkers who can be registered with the TMC will be clear only after their documents are verified," said BG Pawar, deputy municipal commissioner, TMC.

If the sources are to be believed, more than 50% of the hawkers will not be eligible for the registration due to improper documents and no valid proofs of having worked in the city for 15 years.

Several hawkers have come to the city in the last 5 to 10 years. According to policy norms, only those hawkers who have been carrying out business in the city since past 15 years will be registered.

The registered hawkers will then be allotted space for selling goods in TMC's hawking zone. No hawkers will be allowed to do business outside the hawker's zone. A fine of Rs5,000 and an imprisonment of six months could be the penalty for flouting the law.
