Mahendra Kewat, 35, who allegedly set a traffic constable on fire on Wednesday after he tried to fine him for ferrying five people in his autorickshaw, is a habitual offender.
According to the Manikpur police, he has two serious cases registered against him previously. These include cases for attacking a traffic constable and raping a minor girl.
"In 2008, Kewat attacked a traffic constable, A Satoskar. The same year, he was arrested for raping a minor girl in Vasai. He was released on bail after spending 18 months in jail," said deputy police superintendent Deepak Devraj.
Kewat was produced before the additional sessions court in Vasai and was remanded in police custody till November 3. "He has been booked for attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt and using assault to deter a public servant from performing his duty," said Chandrakant Jadhav, senior inspector of Vasai police station.
On Thursday, the Vasai police arrested Kewat who had allegedly set traffic constable Anil Aetwadekar, 40, ablaze. The constable was admitted to Golden Park Hospital with 40% burn injuries. He is recovering fast. A skin specialist from Mumbai visited the ailing constable.
Meanwhile, police superintendent Vishwas Nangre-Patil, inspector general Parambeer Singh, and other senior police officials visited the hospital to enquire about him.
