Mumbai:
Two important pieces of medical revelations changed the case of model and actor Rinky Chowdhury from suicide to murder, leading to the arrest of her boyfriend Sahil Malik on Saturday. The post-mortem reports revealed ligature marks on her neck and an internal injury in the skull.
Chowdhury was found hanging in the kitchen of her flat in Oshiwara on Thursday. Malik, 28, in his statement to the police had said that he was painting the bedroom when the incident occurred. Since she was uncomfortable with the odour, he had asked her to go into the kitchen.
Malik claimed that he saw what she did only when a courier boy delivered a letter addressed to Chowdhury. When he knocked the kitchen door and did not get any response, he broke it open and found her hanging from the ceiling.
He also told the police that immediately after seeing her he cut the rope and put water in her mouth. However, she did not respond. He then informed the police. Initially, a case of accidental death was registered.
But sources said that after preliminary investigations the police suspected foul play. They then asked a panel of two senior doctors to conduct an investigation at the crime scene before beginning the post-mortem. The post-mortem was conducted twice under a video camera. Their reports revealed ligature marks on Chowdhury's neck which is generally observed in the case of strangulation.
The second piece of revelation which the medical team stumbled upon was an internal injury in the skull, which could have happened only due to assault on the head.
"These revelations are important pieces of evidence in this case," said police inspector D Kamble of Goregaon police station.
Incidentally, Kohinoor Chowdhury, the actor's mother had told the police that she did not believe in the suicide theory and suspected that her daughter was murdered. In fact, she alleged that Malik had committed the crime as Rinky refused to marry him. She also said that her daughter had told her that Malik had been harassing her for a while regarding this. Malik, on the other hand, had told the police that Chowdhury could have committed suicide as she was constantly being harassed over phone by his Delhi-based former girlfriend Shyamli Jain.
"We are waiting for Jain to arrive in the city so that she can be questioned in the case," added Kamble. The police are also waiting to interrogate Shivendra Shekhar, said to be a common friend of the couple. Shekhar had reportedly talked to the couple a few hours before the body was discovered, and the police want to question him for leads.
