Mumbai: Brave cops play with fire

Mumbai: Police Inspector Tukaram Kate and his colleagues turned saviors for a family residing in Koparkhairane, when they saved their house from getting converted into ashes early on Wednesday morning.

Kate and his staff attached to Koparkhairane Police Station were on night patrol duty. When the team was near Teen Tanki area at around 4 am, a local resident Rajesh Pandey (30) informed Kate about the fire at his residence. Pandey did not have the number of fire-brigade and asked Kate to help him. The officer immediately informed the police control and asked for more manpower.

"The fire brigade was informed. I thought by the time fire tenders could reach, we can help the family save their house. The blaze had engulfed the first floor of their two-storeyed house. Though all the family members were safe there were chances of fire spreading, so we started throwing water using buckets. Turn by turn our team filled the buckets and went inside the house to extinguish the fire," Kate said.

"Soon more staff from police station joined us. I had assigned two people at Teen Tanki Naka to guide the fire brigade to the right place," the official said. By the time Vashi fire-brigade personnel reached the spot, the fire was extinguished by police officials.

The officials could not figure out the right route to the spot since the road were very confusing. "There were too many gallis and the roads were very confusing. It took time to reach Koparkhairane from Vashi," said an official from Vashi fire-brigade requesting anonymity.

Rajesh, a software engineer stays with his wife, son and parents at plot number 88 in sector 2. "We are very thankful that nobody was injured. We realised about the fire at around 3.45am. The police officials did a great job by saving our house. Most of our electronic items are on the first floor where the fire broke out. The reason for the blaze is yet to be known but we guess it could be due to a short circuit.

Now we are staying with our relative at Chembur till the house is repaired," Rajesh's father, Aditya said.
