Mumbai: Broker's wife kills self by jumping off 16th floor

Mumbai: A 47-year-old woman committed suicide by jumping off her 16th-floor apartment in Goregaon (West) on Wednesday morning.

Preliminary investigations by the police have revealed that the victim was mentally unstable and was undergoing treatment for the past three years. It has also been learnt that she was quite close to her elder daughter and was depressed ever since she got married.

According to the police, Manisha Chhabra, a resident of Amol apartments, Goregaon (West), was residing with her husband Naresh, younger daughter, Priyanshi, 20, and in-laws.

Chhabra took the drastic step around 8.30am when Naresh, a stockbroker by profession, had gone to the airport to see off their eldest daughter Smriti, who was going back to her in-laws' house in New Delhi.

"When Chhabra was standing on the parapet of her room, and was about to jump, one of her neighbours saw her and raised an alarm, but Chhabra jumped to her death before anyone could respond," said a police officer.

After hearing the thud, the building watchmen rushed to the spot and after identifying the body they informed her in-laws, who were at home, and also the police.

Chhabra's family contacted Naresh, who was on his way back from the airport. The neighbours and the watchmen rushed Chhabra to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on admission.

"Chhabra was suffering from chronic depression since the past two to three years and was undergoing medical treatment. She was very close to her elder daughter Smriti. Though she has not left any suicide note, after preliminary investigations it has been found that she committed suicide due to depression," said senior police inspector Surendra Paithankar of the Goregaon (West) police station.

"She was quite emotionally attached to Smriti, who got married three years ago. Since then, Chhabra was in depression. Two months ago, when Smriti came to Mumbai for delivery, she was very happy that she had become a grandmother. She was suffering from depression and was under medical observation of a Malad-based doctor," said police sub inspector Damodar Pawar.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death and Chhabra's body has been sent for postmortem. "But we are still trying to find out the specific reason behind the suicide," said Paithankar.
