Mumbai: The Malad police on Monday arrested a private builder in connection with the murder of a 32-year-old call centre employee, Devang Upadhyay.
Upadhyay's body was found in a garbage bin in Malad (West) on Sunday. Investigations revealed that the arrested person, who is the maternal uncle of Upadhyay's wife Poonam, allegedly murdered him at his Borivli office and dumped his body in the bin.
The arrested person has been identified as Jayesh Naval Shankar Joshi, 50, a resident of Borivli (West).
According to the police, Joshi decided to eliminate Upadhyay because he allegedly tortured Poonam mentally and physically.
"Joshi is a habitual criminal and has cases of assault and forgery registered against him in many police stations," said an officer from Malad police station.
Additional police commissioner, north region, Ramrao Pawar said, "Joshi killed Upadhyay as he was harassing Poonam. We are also investigating whether there was any other motive behind the crime."
According to the police, Joshi committed the crime with the help of two associates who are absconding. "They had beaten Upadhyay with bamboo sticks and later strangulated him," said police inspector RD Prabhu of Malad police station.
Sources said the local deputy commissioner of police had initiated a process to extern Joshi in 2008 because of his criminal record. However, political pressure stalled the proceedings.
