Mumbai:
A senior Mumbai cop and encounter specialist Arun Borude has been dismissed from service, a rare occurrence. An inquiry is on into Borude's role in a rape case involving a 15-year-old girl who became pregnant and gave birth to a premature child a few months ago.
Mumbai's Police Commissioner Sanjiv Dayal announced Borude's dismissal on grounds of immoral conduct today and said "his name figured in the Powai rape case and we have evidence against him."
Earlier this year, the victim had named a pimp, Shantabai Rajaram Gaikwad, who forced her into prostitution, and he was arrested.
The pimp told the police that Borude was one of the people who had sex with the minor.
Dayal said there are two cases against Borude - the rape case and one of trespassing into a flat that had been sealed by a court.
This was the flat where the minor had allegedly been raped. Two other men, both real estate agents were arrested in the case yesterday and presented in court today.
Borude has been on sick leave for some time. He has been charged, along with three other accused, with rape, kidnapping and wrongful confinement and under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act.
The Powai rape case came to light in October when the minor gave birth prematurely at the Rajwadi Hospital in Mumbai. When her family learnt of this, they registered a complaint at the Powai police station.
The victim told the police that she was forced into prostitution early this year by Gaikwad on the pretext of getting her a job. She discovered she was pregnant only in June, but by then it was too late for an abortion.
The police had conducted a DNA test on both mother and child to establish charges against Borude.
Police Commissioner Dayal said the Mumbai Police had been "shamed by this incident."
