Mumbai:
Police now suspect that the disgraced encounter specialist Arun Borude, named in the Powai rape case, may be involved in supplying young girls to his seniors to be in their good books.
According to the FIR in the Powai rape case, Senior Police Inspector Arun Borude and three others have been charged under Sections 366(a), 376 and 34 of the IPC and Sections 4 and 5 of the Anti-prostitution Law, 1956. He was dismissed from service a day after he was named in the FIR.
After a trail of investigation led a new team of sleuths to suspect Borude of running a sex racket, the police booked him under the anti-prostitution laws.
A crucial piece of evidence surfaced when investigators stumbled upon some telephone numbers on the cell phone of Shantabai who forced the victim into prostitution.
The police ran a check on one of the numbers and found that it was being used by Borude for the last five years, although the SIM was in the name of Sugunan Narayan, a Powai resident.
Borude filed an anticipatory bail application in the sessions court on Thursday, claiming he is being falsely implicated in the case.
In his bail plea, the controversial former cop stated that he was an honest police officer who had been in service for several years. He also claimed that this was a conspiracy to tarnish his image. Borude further stated in his affidavit that he could not remain present in the court as he was unwell.
Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjeev Dayal said Borude has brought shame to the force and the department.
Borude who reported sick for work on November 5 has been absconding since. Sources in the underworld suspect that Borude may have slipped into Nepal. He had called in sick before the police could haul him for an id parade. Reportedly, he knows gangsters well and they could have provided him with a safe haven.
The other accused in the case: Mohanchand Shyam (45) and Chandrabhan Gupta (45), both real estate agents have been named along with Borude and Shantabai in the FIR. The police arrested them on Sunday.
The police have provided round the clock security to the victim after perceiving a threat to her life. The police are preparing to subject the accused to an identification parade today.
The remand copy for Shantabai, available with MiD DAY, reveals the victim told the police about Shantabai Gaikwad, who had assured her of Rs 300 a day if she followed his instructions.
