Mumbai:
A police constable in Mumbai is the latest to join those who prefer a boy child. The policeman was arrested for kidnapping a two-year-old-boy, as he had three daughters and no son to carry on his heritage.
On May 24, daily wageworker, Ashok Wadekar (name changed) filed a missing persons complaint about his son Ashish (name changed). "His family sleeps on the street near Tata Power House, Borivli (east) from where the son was abducted at night," said Pradeep Rao Rane, Assistant Police Inspector, Kasturba Police station. During their investigations it was discovered that a police constable Dattaray Rathod from Amboli police station, along with his accomplice, abducted the child.
Rathod and Santosh Parab, a flower vendor, picked up the kid while his family was asleep at 3.30 am. However, during the abduction, Rathod left behind a trail of clues, which helped in nabbing him.
An elderly couple who sleeps on the same pavement claims they saw Rathod on the night of the kidnapping. He also offered them his cellphone to call up their son, who was returning home late that night. Police officials state that the call helped them to trace Rathod.
"One of our beat constables, Satish Jadhav, too, had spotted the duo. But Rathod showed him his identity card and said he worked for the North control. This was the other clue that helped us nab him."
The Borivli police went to Rathod's house in Andheri (east) following the statements given by the elderly couple and the constable on night duty. The police found the child at Rathod's house and arrested him on the charges of kidnapping. While speaking to Rathod's nephew, who resided in the same house, it was found that Rathod's wife and three daughters had gone to their village. "Rathod's nephew too was suspicious about the child and had called his aunt (Rathod's wife). But the constable did not give proper answers to his wife too," the police informed.
Rathod told the police that he wanted a son and hence kidnapped the boy. But, police officials do not believe his claims. "We think Rathod is involved in a bigger child trafficking scam. He must have got good money and we are investigating this angle now," said Rao Rane.
Meanwhile, the child has been handed over to his parents and Rathod will be produced in court on May 28.
