Mumbai cops file FIRs on 'bribed' paper

Mumbai: Guess what some police stations in the city would resort to in order to fix a unique problem with their printers? They seek small bribes from the shops and office establishments within their areas, and fix the printer problem.

Sources in the police department say that papers supplied to the police station is of such a poor quality and even the quality of print is so bad that they have little choice but to resort to this illegal move.

Several police sources claim that, in order to get their work going, they are forced to seek 'small favours' from the shops and other business establishments located within their area of jurisdiction.

"We ask them to buy and give us reams of printing papers, which obviously are of a good quality," said a police officer who did not wished to be named, owing to the fear of being reprimanded by his superiors.

The officer adds that, at times, they also ask the complainants whose cases have been successfully solved, to donate the reams of papers and other stationery materials to the police stations.

However, they do not always take to bribing in kind. A police officer, on conditions of anonymity, said that the demand of the stationery is much higher than that supplied to the police stations.

"On many such occasions, we are forced to spend money from our own pockets to fund the stationery. Only one out of nine times do we get the reimbursement," he chuckles.
