Mumbai: Almost 10 months after he was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for stealing data and cheating his employer in the United States, a Malad-based engineer has been jailed for one year.
Yogesh Sonar from Mumbai cheated his employer A&A Marketing, a US-based Internet marketing firm in June 2009. His accomplices Suraj Nair and Darpana Sanghvi are absconding,
They stole confidential information to set up their own firm and took away A&A's clients. The offence was considered a federal crime.
According to the US Department of Justice, Sonar will be in prison for one year. Thereafter, he will be required to consistently report to the local police for two years and will be required to pay up a flat amount of $100 (Rs 4,450). Sonar has also been ordered to pay $64,712 (Rs 29 lakh) as compensation to A&A Marketing.
A&A Marketing Vice-President, Vini Narang, had filed a theft complaint against Sonar on June 9. Another complaint was filed in a US district court on June 12, against the three accused.
Narang said the theft of data had caused him huge monetary loss.
A&A detected the fraud following an e-mail received by Narang. It led to the Internet Protocol address of the computer used by Sonar.
