Mumbai gets its first motorwoman

Mumbai: Marking a special milestone in the history of Mumbai local, Priti Kumari has become the first motorwoman on the Western suburban line.

The buzz today was larger and the crowd bigger for the 2:29 pm local from Churchgate.

An ecstatic Priti said, "I am excited. It's a big moment."

Thirty four-year-old Priti from Darbhanga in Bihar had to complete one year of training to get behind the wheel.

Fascinated by how fast trains go, this housewife and mother, decided to take up this unusual career choice.

"I was holidaying in Mumbai when I saw how fast the trains go and how many people depend on it. So I decided to drive one," said Priti.

Ferrying nearly 53 lakh passengers every day, Mumbai's locals are the city's life line.

Driving a local train requires nerves of steel, given how overcrowded and chaotic they are, but going by the public support and goodwill Priti has, she has a lot going for her.

"I am so proud to be on a train driven by a woman," said a passenger.

"Women are equal to men. This shows they can do anything," said another.
