Mumbai:
Suspected murderer mutilates victims' bodies and faces to prevent identification; police form patrol teams to increase vigilance
Two victims in the last two days have fallen prey to an alleged serial killer in Mumbai, who maims their bodies so that they cannot be identified. Three other similar cases were reported in the last two years.
The series of murders has baffled the police in the North region (Dahisar to Goregaon) because without the identification of the victims, they cannot establish the suspect's identity or the motive behind the murders. The investigating officers of these cases say that the killer disfigures the bodies in such a way that it is unidentifiable. "The killer does not leave any evidence behind that could point to the victim's identity," said a police officer.
Interestingly, though all the murders were committed in areas under the jurisdiction of North region police, there have been no missing complaints that could be linked to the five bodies.
"We suspect that all the five murders were committed by the same person but are yet to figure out how he chooses his victims," said another police officer. "This killer is becoming an increasing worry for us," he added.
According to the police, the accused takes the victim to an isolated spot and after killing the victim, destroys any evidence that could lead to the identification of the corpse.
Additional Commissioner of Police (North Zone) Ramrao Pawar swung into action and devised a plan in a bit to increase vigilance. Starting today, three police squads will be formed to patrol all isolated and vacant places in their respective areas. "If the killer knows that we are watching every isolated spot, it could help to prevent further incidents. We will ensure that these teams patrol their areas rigorously," said Pawar.
