Mumbai:
Members of the Christian community in Mulund are irked. For, despite repeated complaints about the lack of amenities at the cemetery in Mulund (E), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is paying no heed to their pleas.
Residents have been facing issues such as lack of bone well, light, water, overgrown weeds and approach road since June 2010. "We have written to the T-Ward officials. Despite informing them, they seem to be taking no action. It is difficult to get to the cemetery due to the overgrown weeds which have now become a breeding ground for dangerous reptiles and snakes. Also, there is no facility for water or bone well," said Jude Fernandes, president, Mulund Cemetery Committee.
The cemetery was made available for the community four years ago. Josephine Fernandes said, "Four years ago we got this space after a lot of struggle. But, the struggle somehow continues. The officials have been contemplating re-opening of graves that are over 18 months old. This normally is done after a period of five years."
Dr Sangita Hasnale, assistant commissioner, T-Ward, said, "The concerned officials are looking into the matter."
