Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has issued notices to mutton and chicken shops in the satellite city which are operating without any license. A survey carried out by the civic body has shown that of the 263 mutton shops functioning in the city only 20 are authorised. These shopowners need to submit relevant documents to obtain the license.
"According, to the norms laid down by the state government and the civic corporation, animals like goat can be butchered only in a slaughter house. Cutting of an animal in open is unhygienic, therefore the mutton shop owners should directly get the meat from slaughter house," informed a NMMC official on condition of anonymity.
The licenses are issued after a proper inspection of mutton shops by the civic authorities. "For opening mutton shop one must have a proper water connection, drainage system and other facilities. The civic department gives license only after inspecting all this to ensure good hygiene," the official added. Moreover, the mutton shop should not be near any religious place, school or hospital and where ever they are located, a no objection certificate from the residents of nearby housing society is required.
Most of the existing shops in the city are not fulfilling the above criteria, rather they have become a nuisance for the residents. "All the mutton shop owners should observe norms set by NMMC and those who don't have the license should submit relevant documents before October 15 or action will be taken against them," the official added. Presently, 50 shop owners have made the applications, while more than 190 shop owners are yet to submit their documents.
