It was a tragic Diwali for a six-year-old girl in Naigaon as her neighbour took advantage of it to rape her thrice on Thursday. Vinod Chauhan (39) was arrested by the police on charges of raping a minor.
According to the police, Chauhan was popular with children in his neighbourhood because he used to distribute sweets among them often.
He also distributed sweets on Diwali eve, but he allegedly told the girl that she would have to accompany him to a nearby open plot if she wanted them. According to the police, he then went on to rape the child thrice in a span of one hour. Subsequently, he left the girl there and fled.
Later in the evening, the girl's parents got worried and began a search for her but could not find her. They also went in search of her in the open plot. After some time, they heard her cries. When they finally did locate her, they found her lying in a pool of blood. They immediately took her to a primary health centre in Vasai where the doctor informed them that she had been raped.
When the parents asked the girl, she mentioned Chauhan's name.
Subsequently, they approached the police and lodged a complaint against him. Chauhan lives with his brother and sister. When the police went to his house, they couldn't find him there. They had to detain his siblings who later gave them details about his workplace. "We arrested Chauhan from his workplace in Bhayander where he had gone to collect his salary so that he could flee the city. We have charged him with rape," said Assistant Police Inspector Rajendra Kole from the Naigaon police station.
Chauhan has been booked under Section 376 (rape of minor) and Section 363A (kidnapping a minor) of the Indian Penal Code.
