Mumbai: Notorious criminal shot dead in encounter

Mumbai: A notorious criminal, identified as Mangesh Narkar, was shot dead by officers of the crime branch in an encounter on Sunday at Chembur. Narkar had fled from the Nashik jail in October and he was the first person to be booked under the MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) while being in jail.

Narkar, a resident of Shahkar Nagar in Wadala, is a history-sheeter and has more than a dozen serious offences registered against him. Crime branch officers Arun Chavan, Nandkumar Gopale, Shripad Kale and Sanjay Nikam laid a trap after getting information that Narkar would meet his associate at a church in Chembur.

"At 4.37am, we asked Narkar to surrender, but he started firing at the police," an officer said. "After the first round, his pistol got jammed. He was injured in the retaliatory police firing. Doctors at Rajawadi Hospital declared him dead."

Narkar and his accomplice Sachin Khambe were operating from Bangalore jail, the officer said. "We found that their men were involved in a firing at a hotelier in Vakola last year," he said. "Following this, he was booked under MCOCA."

"Narkar and Khambe tried to flee while being taken to Nashik jail from Taloja jail on October 6," another officer said. "When they stopped at an eating joint, they hurled chilli powder at the policemen and tried to run. While Khambe was held, Narkar managed to escape. Four policemen were suspended in connection with the incident.
