Mumbai student body organises sex education party

Mumbai: Sex education came at a theme party for the Networking Student Capabilities (NSC) organisation on Friday at Khar Gymkhana Club.

Around 45 students from various colleges, including NMIMS and Mithibhai, attended the Denim 'N' Blue theme party co-organised by a popular condom brand that recently entered the denim retail business.

The party was a result of the findings from the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) that indicated that more than one-third of young Indians are sexually active before they turn 18, and an increase in numbers due to peer pressure.

Bhavna Bahirvani, director of NSC, said, "There was a survey which revealed that many school students have physical relations with friends, so we felt the need for sex education. The party was a means to interact with students at their level." The get-together also involved filling up a questionnaire on sex.

Monish Dave (22), Management student from MET college at Bandra, says, "In today's fast-paced life, casual sex is common, hence the urgency to step up and discuss the sex-related issues. Besides, parental support on such touchy topics is hard to come by."

Another student, on condition of anonymity, added, "NSC is like a support centre, where like-minded youngsters like us can get together and openly discuss issues pertaining to our generation."
