Mumbai:
College students may soon have a smoother brush with officialdom as the Mumbai University administration is working on a special training programme for its entire staff at both its Kalina and Fort campuses. It will teach them to be soft-spoken and interact with students in a positive manner.
The varsity has created a special employee centre for this activity and experts will be invited to deliver lectures to its employees. Interestingly, the programme is not only for class three or four officers, but even the higher-ups will also have to attend these lectures.
"The varsity is meant for students and we are here to provide them with they want to learn. We are taking this initiative for students so that they feel that this is my varsity campus and each time I approach the authorities here with a query, my problem will be solved. We want to create this kind of confidence among students. Not just me, but the entire varsity should be student-centric," said Dr Rajan Welukar, vice chancellor, University of Mumbai.
He added that the scope of the centre will be gradually expanded to include college staff. "Initially, this centre will be used for varsity employees, after which we will extend its programmes to college employees, too," said Welukar. The university had around 6.5 lakh students, many of whom visit the two campuses for work related to the examination section, the admission section and other departments every day. But most have to face rude staff, which many a times leads to scuffles.
"We will use this centre to train employees on how to converse with students," said Dr Rajpal Hande, director, Board of College and University Development.
