Mumbai: Soon, you can stop worrying about bribing RTO officials to get your new vehicles registered. By early March next year, the transport department expects to fully implement its e-payment scheme in all 45 RTOs across the state.
This scheme will enable you to register your new vehicles by making the payment for it through a software developed by the National Informatics Centre -- Grass -- at the car dealer's showroom itself. Also, in all likelihood, all the other monetary transactions that one makes at the RTOs will be processed through the software, which is connected directly with the RBI through the internet.
State Transport Commissioner confirmed that the scheme will be the transport department's intention to fully implement the e-payment facility. He said, "This scheme is being expanded to all the RTOs across the state so that we can have a corruption-free and transparent payment system for the people."
The transport department had started this system on a trial basis at the Central RTO in Tardeo in late June. After facing initial hiccups, the system has finally begun to function smoothly.
An official from the Tardeo RTO, while speaking to DNA on the condition of anonymity, said, "It is a very citizen-friendly system that is beneficial for all - officials as well as buyers; work load of the officials will be reduced while buyers can register vehicles even when RTO is not working and won't need to wait in never-ending queues."
An indication of how effective this scheme is could be the fact that until late October the central RTO managed to earn more than Rs12 crore just by registering new vehicles through the software. Thus, the official added, other monetary transactions could also be integrated by tweaking the software a bit.
