Mumbai: Watchmen by the day, jewel thieves at night

Mumbai: In the course of their investigation to crack a theft case, Thane police stumbled upon a very interesting piece of information.

The police found out that an organised gang of building security guards was behind the burglary in a jewellery shop, in which valuables worth Rs 9 lakh were stolen. Police arrested three members of the gang and succeeded in recovering most of the stolen material.

The burglary took place on October 5 at Vijay Jewellers situated in Ramchandra Nagar-2. Burglars had broken two safety doors at the rear side of the shop and stolen cash with gold and silver ornaments, valuing Rs 9 lakh.

Since the shop was situated a few metres from a police outpost, the blame for the same fell on the police. "Tulbahaddur Saud, a watchman from Jayesh Society, which is adjacent to the jewellery shop, was missing since the day of the incident," Deputy Commissioner of Police Ashok Morale said.

Assistant Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Rathod added, "During investigation we found that two other building security guards Bharat Vishwakarma and Birbahaddur Saud who were Tulbahaddur's friends were also missing. We formed a special squad in search of them."

Police arrested two accused persons Tulbahaddur and Bharat Vishwakarma from Indralok Society in Bhayandar, while Birbahaddur was arrested from another society in Thane on October 14.

Some of the stolen gold and silver jewellery worth Rs 6.25 lakh was recovered from the trio. Senior police inspector BR Chowdhary from Wagle Estate police station is investigating to ascertain the involvement of other members.
