Mumbai: Young cricketer dies after falling in water tank

Mumbai: Taking a shortcut to reach his coaching academy proved fatal for a young city cricketer on Tuesday morning. Sixteen-year-old Naved Naushad Shamshin tried to cross the fencing to get into the playing area, and accidentally fell into a water tank at Azad Maidan.

A resident of Ready Money Compound in Byculla, Shamshin, like everyday, left home in the morning for his academy but never reached there. It was later found outthat the Standard X student of Jalbhai Dorabji Bharda High School (JDBHS) in Grant Road, died in the tank.

A fellow student of the academy, run by one Salim Shaikh, saw a cricket gear bag lying on the top of the water tank that connects the fencing and playing area of the ground. He then informed this to nearby people, who then noticed that bubbles were coming from the water inside the tank. It was then they learnt that someone had fallen into the tank.

The police and fire brigade officials took out Shamshin's body at around 9 am and sent it to the GT Hospital for postmortem. Later his body was handed over to the family.

"It is believed that while taking a shortcut to get to the playing area, Shamshin accidentally stepped into a partly covered metal sheet and fell into the tank. Injuries on his body suggest that he got hurt when he fell inside," the police said.

A similar incident was recorded in the police books last month but on that occasion, a man, who fell into the tank, was pulled out alive. The tank is believed to be maintained by the Public Works Department.

Shamshin, a well-built player, started playing season ball cricket only a couple of months back and was considered a decent all-rounder.
